The Measurement of Ultrashort Laser Pulses
نویسنده
چکیده
Indeed, to see the action in any fast event, whether it’s a computer chip switching states, dynamite exploding, or a simple soap bubble popping, requires a strobe light with a shorter duration in order to freeze the action. But then to measure the strobe-light pulse requires a light sensor whose response time is even faster. And then to measure the light-sensor response time requires an even shorter pulse of light. Clearly, this process continues until we arrive at the shortest event ever created. And this event is the ultrashort light pulse. Ultrashort light pulses as short as a few femtoseconds have been generated, and it’s now routine to generate pulses less than 100 fs long. And we’d like to be able to measure their electric field vs. time or frequency.

Direct measurement of spectral phase for ultrashort laser pulses.
We present an intuitive pulse characterization method that provides an accurate and direct measurement of the spectral phase of ultrashort laser pulses. The method requires the successive imposition of a set of quadratic spectral phase functions on the pulses while recording the corresponding nonlinear spectra. The second-derivative of the unknown spectral phase can be directly visualized and e...

Frequency-resolved optical gating (FROG) is a technique to measure ultrashort laser pulses that optically constructs a spectrogram of a laser pulse. A two-dimensional (2-D) phase retrieval algorithm is used to extract the intensity and phase of a pulse from its spectrogram. We have improved a recently presented principal component generalized projections algorithm (PCGPA) making it easier to im...

The birth of laser in the 1960s opened up a new era for optics. Many interesting laser applications arose ever since in subjects like nonlinear optics, holography, spectroscopy, and quantum optics [1-4]. Among those, ultrafast optics is an emerging area that frequently catches people’s attention. Ultrafast optics deals with short pulses in time scale ranging from picosecond down to attosecond, ...

We review the problem of measuring an ultrashort laser pulse and then describe several experimentally simple, accurate, and very reliable methods for measuring both very simple laser pulses and very complex ultrashort light pulses. Each of these methods comprises only a few easily aligned components, and they allow the measurement of a wide range of pulses, including those with time-bandwidth p...

A self-referenced technique based on digital holography and frequency-resolved optical gating is proposed in order to characterize the complete complex electric field E (x, y, z, t) of a train of ultrashort laser pulses. We apply this technique to pulses generated by a mode-locked Ti:Sapphire oscillator and demonstrate that our device reveals and measures common linear spatio-temporal couplings...

Ultrafast dynamical processes in solids may be triggered, studied and even manipulated with help of ultrashort laser pulses. Also for materials processing there is an enormous potential of ultrashort laser pulses. Thus, femtosecond laser–solid interaction is of significant interest to the fields of both basic research and industrial applications. Here, I present results of theoretical considera...
